Who's it for?

These pictures show residential housing built out over the walkway, and an example of the associated restaurant cafe development. These are examples that have concerned local Hamburg residents. They ask the question: what is here for me? Aspects of the development will appeal strongly to those who live and work there.

The old and the new

The Hafencity site is home to some wonderful heritage warehouses and dock buildings. These are being converted to commercial and residential uses. The new buildings contain architectural features which link with heritage. But the public walkways - while attractive to look at - contain little in the way of activation.

Private Vs Public

HafenCity is outside Hamburg's flood protection - so can be subject to flood tides of 6 metres plus. That's a good reason to wall off private development. But it creates a wall between public and private. The public spaces will survive inundation - but will they be enough to attract public - without the activation of ferries and things to do?
