Malmo - Waterfront Development

Malmo

Above: 170 degree pan from headland park, through to built park in foreground, with housing development behind. In built park: note soft gravel walkway finish, formal garden area, grassed area, trees, and substantial battlement style lookout to Sweden/Denmark bridge. This development is just a couple of years old.

Activated Edges for Youth

This is an extraordinary design in its attraction to the youth of Malmo. A lot of this comes the activation of the actual water edge: places to access the water, dive or jump in. Remember: this is the Baltic and these pics were taken in mid-May. The water was cold and the air had a spring chill in it, but the area was vibrant with young people. Exemplary.

Malmo

Above: 180 degree pan showing much of headland park at Malmo. Effort has been made to include bushy areas, some trees, and to landscape and contour the land to form a semblance of a wild coastal landscape. This works. The space is reasonably desolate and empty, though the hills give the spaces some privacy. But it is essentially a lonely space. A few fishers and cyclists visited while I was there. I believe this was the objective - as other built public areas were designed to be much more active through design.
